How LifeSaver Living Solutions Started
LifeSaver Living Solutions LLC is a business designed for Active Older Adults trying
to stay independent in their own homes. When my Father, Harry Fini, Sr. got sick at
88 years, he had just finished a full day’s work as a barber in center city Philadelphia.
He had a gripping pain in his lower abdomen and then commenced to walk 8 blocks to
the Emergency Room of the University Medical Center where I had coordinated all of his
care. He then collapsed from low blood pressure, 63 over 30.
He was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit and in the middle of the night I was notified as his emergency contact to bring his Advanced Directive and Living Will because of a raging urinary tract infection. They did not expect him to live through the night.
When I arrived at the hospital at 4:00 AM I asked the staff what was going on, and their answer was “old age.” I became incensed. Yes, my father was 88 but he lived independently at home by himself, he worked 60 hours a week, five days a week on his feet all day as a barber, he still drove, he could tell you what happened fifty years ago, and he could tell you what he heard on the news at 6:00 AM before he went to work. Old age was not a consideration in this case.
When the Intensivist arrived at 7:00 AM I asked about my father’s prognosis, and told the Doctor that I had coordinated all of my Father’s care through that University Medical Center for times exactly like this. “That’s nice,” was his response. I then asked him if he was going to consult with all of the other physicians my father had been seeing there.
“No,” he said, “That’s not my scope of practice. When I asked what his scope of practice was, he explained was that it was to look at the patient as he/she is presented, and to stabilize the patient thereafter. I asked the Intensivist if it would be helpful to speak to my Father’s cardiologist who had been treating him for arrhythmia, or his Neurologist who had treated my father several years back for a mini stroke, or his Urologist who had catheterized my father because of weak bladder, or his pharmacist who was the expert on the 9 different medications my father was taking. He said it would be helpful but it just wasn’t done and NOT his scope of practice. And the reason that it is not a physician’s scope of practice is that there is only one fee paid to one doctor and as the current attending physician to my Father, the Intensivist was not anxious to share or forfeit his fee. And that is the ONLY reason why their “scope of practice” prohibits them from consulting the other physicians.
I explained to the Doctor that his scope of practice just changed, and if he disagreed, I asked which would be cheaper – fee sharing or a civil case in court for malpractice. I notified all of the other physicians as well, and when they objected I posed the same question. The only one who was more than happy to dial in on a conference call was the Pharmacist. When they got together on a series of phone calls, there was a mutual feeling of incredulity when each discovered a piece of the health puzzle that led to my Father landing in Intensive Care. Together, including the pharmacist who provided a wealth of knowledge on drug therapy, they formulated a collaborative plan and lo and behold, my Father survived. He spent 21 days in Intensive Care (which is an eternity by medical standards today), he went into physical rehab and Occupational Therapy for 3 weeks, fully recovered, went back to work for 3 more months until he officially retired at 89, and lived another 4 years until he passed away at almost 92 from a massive heart attack. His two goals were to remain independent in his own home, and never to linger for months or years with a debilitating disease. The first I helped him with, the second he was blessed because there is little we can do to prevent a debilitating disease.
The first baby boomer turned 65 on January 1, 2011 and the aging population over 65 will grow from a current 32 million to over 78 million over the next 18 years. The National Office on Aging and AARP report that 93% of people over 65 do not want to ever move out of their homes and to live the rest of their lives in the home where they raised their families and where they have been part of the community for decades. The principal tenet of my business is aimed at assisting people of any age, but primarily those 65 and older, to remain in their homes forever, that is, Aging in Place, without moving to assisted living, adult communities or nursing homes.
Aging in place is the principal tenet behind LifeSaver Living Solutions, and we provide a number of services and products to achieve that goal. Explore our site and call for more information. We look forward to serving you.
